Our beloved mother, Angeline Gale Karel, passed away the evening of December 17, 2023, after a short stay at River Rock Assisted Living facility in Buhl, Idaho.
Angie was born on a farm east of Belfield, North Dakota on September 28, 1939, to Louis and Gladys Hurt. In the summer of 1945, her dad could no longer farm so the family moved into town. They purchased and ran the Gateway Hotel.
She attended 1st through 12th grade and graduated from Belfield high school. After graduation, she enrolled at Dickinson State Teachers College, and earned both a Rural and Standard teaching certification. After graduating, she headed to Twin Falls, Idaho with a few other teachers to teach school. Her first assignment was teaching at Harrison Elementary school, and she then moved onto teaching at Morningside and Saint Edwards Elementary schools. In later years, she became a substitute teacher in the Buhl schools.
In the fall of 1959 while teaching at Harrison Elementary, she met Francis Karel and they were married on August 12, 1961, in Belfield, North Dakota. From this marriage came four children, Emma (Michelle Karel-Ward), Craig (Kathleen Karel), Dan (Laurie Karel) and John (Renee Karel). She has 11 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren with one on the way.
In 1974 she moved her family to the Karel farm west of Buhl to help her father-in-law with the farming operation. Angie and Francis built a ranch home on the corner of the family farm. She also helped Francis run a part-time refrigeration business.
Angie loved God, family, and country. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Catholic women’s league, and the Lucerne ladies club.
Angie loved her faith and loved to share it with others. She taught religious education classes to both children and adults. She really was a true teacher to the very end!
The Angie Karel family wishes to express our deepest gratitude to the St. Luke’s medical teams, River Rock Assisted Living in Buhl, and Heritage Home Health & Hospice for their loving care of our dear mother!
