Charles J. Hill “Charlie,” lifetime resident of Buhl, Idaho passed away Friday, July 20, 2018 at the age of 86.
He was born February 5th, 1932 to Charles and Pearl (Prough) Hill at the family home in Lucerne, Idaho. He was their sixth child.
Charlie spent most of his childhood in the Deep Creek/Salmon Falls Creek areas—attending school at Deep Creek and then Castleford Schools, graduating in 1950 with honors. While in school he participated in many sports including basketball, football and baseball, where he made many life long friends.
Hunting with his brothers brought Dad great joy and he was very close with all of his siblings his whole life. He was an avid bowler, bowling in many leagues and tournaments throughout the years, a hobby he still enjoyed. Dad was always quick to lend a helping hand and volunteered much of his time to others. Later in life he especially enjoyed helping at the senior center, taking meals to those who were unable to make it in and being a part of the activities held there.
In November 1952 Charlie married the love of his life, Shirley Wright, in Buhl, Idaho. Dad was drafted into the army in October of 1953 and served occupation as a gun crewman in Germany. He was discharged on October 21, 1955. Together Mom and Dad had three children, Debbie in 1954, Steven in 1957 and Scott in 1958. Dad taught us kids how to play sports, work hard and be self-sufficient individuals. He attended as many of our activities as possible and also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events later in life. He always offered up a little coaching to us all from his own knowledge of sports and was also quick to offer any referee some advice as well, wanted or not!
After returning from the military Dad set out farming in Buhl, working closely with his brothers and later teaching his boys the art. He raised cattle on irrigated pasture for many years, and later on bought some range in the Pleasant Valley Grazing Association.
Charles is survived by his three children, Debbie (Kevin) Jerome of Puyallup, WA, Steven (Mary) Hill of Buhl, ID, and Scott Hill of Wells, NV; grandchildren: Steven (Sara), Charlie (Emerald), Tim (Savannah), Jessica (Eric), Daniel, Roxanne, Melissa (Don), Mike (Dexy), Michelle (Oliver); great-grandchildren: Sage, Tanner, Landon, Adalynn, Serenity, Evelyn, Adalynn, August, Elliot, Gracie and Zoe.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, brothers Jack and John, and sisters Bo and Tootie.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Dan Hill, Megan Myers and Buhl Quick Response for your loving help for our father.
A memorial contribution in honor of Charlie can be made to the West End Senior Center, a place he loved.
