Monty Bert Montgomery was born April 19, 1936, in Ogden City, Weber County, Utah, to Robert A. Montgomery and Veta Rae (Thomas) Montgomery. He had three older brothers, Robert L., Lynn T., and Max R. Montgomery, and two younger sisters, Karen (Vecera) and Devera (Alvey).
Bert was raised and lived on a farm between Buhl and Wendell, Idaho. He attended grades one through three in a one-room schoolhouse located in the canyon west of Clear Lakes and grades four through seven in a two-room schoolhouse in the West Point area. He attended Junior High School in Buhl and graduated from Buhl High School class of 1954.
He served in the Idaho National Guard 116 Armored Cavalry for nine years. On November 2, 1962, he married Jennie Louise Smellie in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To this union were born five children, Clay T. (Laura), David C. (Traci), Eliecea Lynn (Dal Wheeler), John R. (Valori) and Daniel F. (Meagan) Montgomery.
For twenty-five years he was involved in can manufacturing at the Green Giant Buhl location, followed by several years in the Distribution Department. He retired in October 2004. He and Jennie then served eighteen months in the Indiana Indianapolis Mission.
Bert was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many callings. He also worked in Scouting for over forty years, receiving the Silver Beaver award. He believed in the youth of the community and felt an obligation to help them with their lives where he could.
He loved his Savior Jesus Christ and his family. Throughout his life he shared his faith and values with his family and friends. He loved to farm and be outdoors hiking in the canyon. He passed this love of being outdoors to his children and grandchildren through many hiking trips. All the grandchildren looked forward to going on an adventure with grandpa.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents; and two older brothers, Robert L. who was killed in World War II, and Lynn T. who passed away earlier this year.
He leaves behind eighteen grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Bert was able to have the life he wanted. A blessing, he felt, from his Father in Heaven.
